The statistics are disappointing, frustrating and alarming.
Despite countless efforts over the years to curb underage drinking, the practice continues. And it continues to be a deadly practice.
A recent compliance check resulted in 18 of 54 businesses cited for selling alcohol to minors. That translates into one-third, 33 percent, in violation.
Contributing to the availability are adults, both parents and older friends, who supply alcohol to minors. The local Council for Drug Free Youth conducts an ongoing campaign to discourage parents from the illegal and ill-advised practice of supplying alcohol to youngsters.
The ready availability of alcohol for minors is reflected by consumption.
In a 30-day period, 50 percent of high-school seniors and 43 percent of juniors had more than one drink, according to a 2006 study by state education and mental health agencies.
The problem of underage drinking was the focus of a three-day gathering held here recently. The conference drew more than 80 law enforcement officers from 40 jurisdictions.
In addition to conducting compliance checks, officers staged a mock exercise to practice breaking up an outdoor teen drinking party.
After illegally obtaining alcohol, teens frequently gather for parties held in rural, sparsely populated areas.
When those parties escape the attention of law enforcement, the consequences are listed in the injury and fatality accidents reported to the news media and grieving survivors.
Children in our community are being maimed and killed. Alcohol is the primary culprit.
Some adults — parents, friends, retailers — continue to aid and abet the carnage.
Thankfully, law enforcement officers — supported by members of the Council for Drug Free Youth and other responsible citizens — refuse to surrender our young people to the scourge of alcohol.
Allies are welcome. But, at the very least, don’t obstruct their efforts by providing alcohol to minors.
