Youth view: Signs of progress
A new report about a self-assured Iraqi general may be a sign of progress in the Iraq War.
General Wajih Hameed has a swagger that sometimes grates on American officers, according to a report this week from The Associated Press. He has taken more active roles in military decisions by informing U.S. officers what they will do, instead of asking for advice.
Most of our military leaders welcome his attitude, because it indicates a newfound sense of self-confidence.
Iraqi soldiers have jumped into fierce offensives against insurgent forces in Basra, Mosul and the Sadr City section of Baghdad over the past few months. Their willingness to take the initiative in battle may lead to eventual reductions in American forces.
The other side of this story is that some feel American control is slipping away. The loss of control fuels fear that Iraq is setting itself up for a catastrophe, or may opt for a return to old ways of military rule.
But, we like seeing this confidence from Iraqi forces. It gives us optimism that the United States can finally begin efforts to pull American soldiers out of Iraq and get them home, where they belong.
Such a pullout should be gradual. We agree that a sudden displacement could be disastrous for Iraqi civilians.
However, the United States should prepare itself for having a continual presence in Iraq.
We feel we should have more of a presence than just an ambassador and embassy. We should have a military presence similar to what we see in other countries around the world.
The members of our board disagree on whether our country should have invaded Iraq. However, now that we are there, we are obligated to leave the country in better shape that when we arrived — and that means we may not leave at all.
