Published November 01, 2009 08:33 pm - On Monday, Oct. 26, a letter appeared in the Globe under the headline “Disappointed in editorial.” This was from Emily Robinson, of the Union of Concerned Scientists, Chicago, Ill. Personally, I find it ironic that she is now from Chicago, but that’s another matter. In her letter, Robinson takes The Joplin Globe to task for daring to challenge the “(consensus of) all major scientific institutions and professional societies around the world (that) concluded that human activity is driving global warming.”

On Monday, Oct. 26, a letter appeared in the Globe under the headline “Disappointed in editorial.” This was from Emily Robinson, of the Union of Concerned Scientists, Chicago, Ill. Personally, I find it ironic that she is now from Chicago, but that’s another matter.
In her letter, Robinson takes The Joplin Globe to task for daring to challenge the “(consensus of) all major scientific institutions and professional societies around the world (that) concluded that human activity is driving global warming.” She may be correct in this statement, but I know for a fact that some outstanding meteorologists beg to differ with this assessment. One of my sons just happens to be one of those meteorologists who understand that this notion is hogwash.
The periodic changes in the climate between warming and cooling are caused by changes in solar activity, not by human activity. The claim that it is human-activity driven is pure convenient bunkum! It wasn’t that long ago that the same “scientific consensus” held that we were entering a period of climate cooling which would result in a new ice age!
Most of the scientists who affirm human-caused global warming are from disciplines which have nothing to do with climatology. Many of these scientists do, however, receive lucrative grants if they find in favor of global warming!
In my opinion, and in the opinion of others, this whole issue of global warming, and the need for a severe binding treaty is nothing less than an effort to cripple the industrial nations (especially the United States of America).
Keep up the thoughtful editorials, and do not be influenced by out-of-state detractors.
