Marilyn Beasley, guest columnist: Professor, here are your answers

JOPLIN, Mo. — I felt it was important to address a guest column by Henry Morgan (Globe, Sept. 2) questioning a column I submitted to the Globe.

As a retired college professor, I would assume that Mr. Morgan keeps up on the news and actually digs out information on his own instead of just listening to what liberals spoon-feed him. I am more than happy to respond to as many of his questions as space will allow.

Mr. Morgan wanted me to state instances of President Barack Obama’s sugarcoating the facts. Well, let’s begin with the unemployment numbers. Obama and his administration say unemployment is at 8.3 percent, when in fact it is much higher as they don’t include those who have stopped looking for work. Obama and his administration said, “Islamist terrorism is no longer a threat.” The head of Obama’s Homeland Security Department, Janet Napolitano, referred to acts of terrorism as “man-caused” disasters. Obama tells us that the economy is improving when in fact our national debt continues to rise daily, unemployment continues to be a problem, food prices are rising and more Americans are on welfare and receiving food stamps.

Mr. Morgan asked me to identify demographics where Obama has made promises he can’t fulfill. Let me start with our senior citizens. Obama told our seniors when it came to Medicare, nothing would change. Yet, he took $716 billion from Medicare to pay for Obamacare. The majority of cuts come from reimbursements to hospitals, private insurance companies and lower payments to home health providers. We are already reading that some doctors will either limit or not take new Medicare patients. Those on Medicare will be limited to services based on the decision of an unelected group of people.

But, there is an even larger demographic that Obama made a promise to, and that is the American people. He said he would cut the debt in half but we see that he has increased the national debt by over $5 trillion in his 31⁄2 years. That, too, is a fact.

Mr. Morgan wanted specifics about Obama bowing down to foreign dignitaries and apologizing for the United States. He bowed down to Saudi King Abdullah and to Japanese Emperor Akihito. As for his apologizing for our great nation, in France in 2009, Obama said, “In American there’s a failure to appreciate Europe’s leading role in the world.” He went on to say, “There have been times where America has shown arrogance and been dismissive, even derisive.” At the Summit of the Americas, he said, “We have at times been disengaged and sought to dictate our terms.” It was also revealed in a top-secret cable published in 2011 by Wikileaks that the Japanese government vetoed the idea of Obama visiting Hiroshima in September 2009 and apologizing for the atomic bomb.

Mr. Morgan, when a president of the United States goes to foreign countries and refers to us as arrogant, dismissive and derisive, he is apologizing for a country that has helped bring freedom to many countries.

Mr. Morgan was interested in where women could get contraceptives for little or nothing. There are numerous community clinics in our country that assist women with contraceptives. Some insurance companies cover up to 80 percent of the cost of birth control pills. Some clinics distribute condoms for free. Mr. Morgan, if women truly need help in getting various forms of contraceptives, help is available.

Mr. Morgan asked if I could name some companies that are being forced to close because of Environmental Protection Agency regulations. Yes, Mr. Morgan, I can. First Energy is to close six coal-fired plants. AEP will close five coal plants. SCE&G is to close several coal plants, because of increasingly stringent regulations. These are just a few companies being affected. Being a professor, Mr. Morgan should realize that closing coal plants will cause utility rates to increase, which will place more of a burden on businesses and individual homeowners.

Mr. Morgan asks if I can prove that the scare tactics of the Obama campaign regarding Republicans poisoning the air, or the so-called “war on women,” or Medicare are nothing but lies. Mr. Morgan, no Republican that I’ve heard has ever said they want to poison the air, are against women’s health or want to push granny over the cliff when it comes to Medicare. As a matter of fact they have said the exact opposite. But, once again, if all you read or listen to are liberals, that’s what you’ll believe.

You asked how Paul Ryan could run circles around the current vice president. Well, that’s easy. All you have to do is listen to Paul Ryan speak.

Mr. Morgan, you asked how any serious reader should feel obligated to take what I write seriously. My answer is simple: I can provide the facts to back up what I write. I don’t expect everyone to agree with me, but I will continue to provide information that can help people make decisions based on facts.
