In our view: Courthouse investment

A renovated courthouse star, in our view, is the crowning touch to a number of recent improvements that have been made to the Jasper County Courthouse.

New light-emitting diode lighting, on Thursday, was installed to replace the 1960s-era neon lighting used to illuminate the star.

The Ruth I. Kolpin Foundation provided $10,000 for the work. In 1964, Ruth Kolpin-Rubison and her family spearheaded an effort to have the star installed on the top of the courthouse. Over the years she has provided the money to keep the star maintained.

The courthouse, built in 1885, in recent months has received a new roof, and the old clock has been painted. State grant money is being used for $100,000 in wiring at the courthouse.

Jim Honey, Eastern District commissioner, says the county is applying for funds for more energy-efficient lighting for all county buildings. Other future plans include updates for air conditioning and heating.

Honey said the Jasper County Courthouse is one of the most-photographed courthouses in the state of Missouri. We appreciate those in our community who have put their support behind keeping it picture-perfect.
