Readers react to death penalty: Costing the taxpayers

Editor’s note: Testimony has begun in the Kansas Senate Judiciary Committee on a proposal to repeal capital punishment. The following are contributions from readers who responded to a request for opinions on the issue.

I read the article two days ago in your paper about Kansas thinking about doing away with the death sentence or, as some call it, the death penalty.

What the people need to do is show them what it is costing each of the people in taxes to feed, house, clothe and medicate each of them who are in prison.

The people out here having to pay their keep should not have to do it for persons who can not make it in society.

While people in this country are putting more distance between God’s word and what is right, they need to stop government from taking more of their money. What should be done away with is life sentencing.

If they can not fit into the system, then they need done away with.
