Our View: Missourians deserve legislators who can get things done

In a matter of a few days, Missouri legislators managed to get down to work and hammer out an offer in hopes of luring Boeing to Missouri.

The December special session was not successful. This past week, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers union approved extending its contract in Seattle for another eight years. The Boeing 777X will continue to be assembled in Washington.

That Missouri didn’t land Boeing is not a surprise. What did surprise us and a lot of Missourians was that lawmakers were focused and worked for a common cause.

It’s too bad that we no longer expect that from our Legislature.

Today’s a new day in Jefferson City and the start of a new legislative session. Our story on the front page of today’s edition previews some of the hot-button issues that you are sure to hear about. Among them will be education funding, teacher tenure, Medicaid expansion (or nonexpansion, it would seem) and a right-to-work law for Missouri.

We want an overhaul of Missouri’s ethics laws to be a priority this year. Early voting, in our opinion, should be this session’s gift to the voting public. Certainly it’s been talked about long enough.

Missourians deserve legislators who can get things done. Can you imagine what a difference it would make for the people who live and work in this state?

No, we didn’t get a Boeing plant. But we still need jobs that pay decent wages. The special session, we hope, set the tone for the regular session.

Legislators should first and foremost work for the people of Missouri.

Even though the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guarantees “the right of the people to keep and bear arms,” Missouri voters on Aug. 5 are being asked to consider an amendment that restates that freedom and then goes even further.
