Our View: Why wait?

Before Matt Blunt was Missouri’s governor, he served as secretary of state. While in office, he recommended that our state adopt early voting.

In his report he said:

“In the states that have adopted early voting, the program has been very popular with the voting public and is credited with generating fresh public enthusiasm for elections.

“Voting is a personal responsibility. However, election authorities and those in government should constantly strive to make the execution of that civic duty as convenient as possible.

“By decreasing polling place lines on Election Day, the potential for confusion and fraud will be reduced and voter confidence and participation can be expected to rise.”

The Republican’s successor, Democrat Robin Carnahan, made an even stronger push while she served in the office.

On Tuesday, Jason Kander, Missouri’s newly elected secretary of state, released a letter he has sent to Missouri House Speaker Tim Jones, R-Eureka, asking him to support early voting.

In the letter, Kander discusses the bipartisan support early voting has received over the years and asks for resolution to a subject that has been talked about for years and years.

Legislation has been drafted, and it is awaiting assignment to a committee so it can be heard.

This legislative session has been one marked by progress. It would be a great time to join other states across the nation where voters are given more time to go to the polls.
