Your View: Basis for clubs

NEOSHO, Mo. — As I understand it, the Neosho School Board recently approved the formation of a Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) Club. For the first time in the history of Neosho High School, a club has been formed based solely on sexual orientation.

Every other club that exists is associated with professional aspirations of members, academic standing of members, social emphasis of members or something similar, without reference to or inquiry into sexual orientation. We now have a club that exists solely on the basis of the sexual orientation of members.

That opens the door for a host of other clubs. The sexual orientation of most students is heterosexual.

I urge administrators and school board members everywhere to re-examine requirements for the formation of clubs and require that the proposed club be associated with an academic offering.

Sexual orientation should not be involved in the formation of any school organization. To allow such clubs is sure to contribute to the exodus of sensible God-fearing students to private Christian schools and the gradual demise of public education.
