Your View: Exemplify leadership

JOPLIN, Mo. — What a wonderful gesture for the Crowder College board to name the new multi-purpose classroom building at Jane after Mr. James Tatum.

That’s exactly how education buildings should be named: after persons who worked first-hand in either developing or playing an instructional, or administrative role, at educational institutions.

Under Mr. Tatum’s leadership, the Neosho junior college boards of many years have used foresight and altruism in providing post-secondary schooling to 10 area communities. There’s a saying: “Lead, follow or get out of the way.” The Crowder board has exemplified the first — leadership. Congratulations to the Crowder College board and its instructional staff.

And while our minds are on education, an appreciation is extended to the 19 teacher education majors from the University of Arkansas who traveled to Joplin to assist Irving teachers in moving their supplies to the new Irving Elementary School.

Those future teachers and their professor have practiced worthy pedagogic traits — initiative and unselfish concern for others. Thanks to present, past and future teachers wherever they may be.

A Missouri Senate committee has adopted a state budget provision that would prevent public colleges and universities from offering in-state tuition rates to students living in the country illegally. Do you agree with this?
