Your View: Here’s to learning lessons

JOPLIN, Mo. — I’m feeling a little under the weather, and today’s Joplin Globe didn’t help me feel any better, thanks to the news of the additional fees charged by the City Council investigator, Tom Loraine.

Why would his bill come in over the payment cap?

A clear contract is the way to ensure that doesn’t happen, and clear communication is the backup to the expectation that won’t happen. Seems this need for clear communication is a recurring theme down at the old Newman building.

We residents will never know the daily details of closed-door meetings, private emails or other influences on decisions made on our behalf. But when you start talking about money — from taxpayers, grants and other public means — it becomes an issue for public concern that we should all be watching.

It appears the city is getting yet another opportunity to practice clear communicating and spelling out expectations.

Here’s to learning the lessons.
