Your View: Power struggle

BAXTER SPRINGS, Kan. — On March 21, George Will commented on the increasing practice of presidents to unilaterally wage war. This is a symptom of the struggle for power within our governmental system.

Since President Bill Clinton, the practice has developed of replacing the title president with that of commander in chief, which is the English rendition of “emperor.” The speaker of the House of Representatives continues to take on the trappings of prime minister, with special treatment and assumption of authority. The Supreme Court has assumed the authority of overruling the Constitution. This replaces the Constitution with the decrees of judges. The federal government continually encroaches on the rights of the states and the people. Some of these areas are education, voting and the right to bear arms.

England has gone through this struggle. The tyranny of Charles I was replaced with the tyranny of Oliver Cromwell. We can only be thankful that our divided government has so far staved off tyranny. But a system is not better than the people.

The decree of a judge that the concept of intelligent design may not be taught in our schools is an example of the tendency to establish control. If dissenting voices cannot be heard, then it is easier to maintain power. I remember when young civil servants were excited about repealing the law preventing government workers from being active in politics. They were unaware that this law was enacted to protect their jobs and eliminate the spoils systems.
