Our View: Pedal power

The Joplin Globe

— The T-shirts have long been printed, but maybe riders in the 800-mile fundraising bicycle trek to New Orleans should creatively change up their shirts.

How about switching up the Jomonola logo with Jomo(r)nola as a way of including Moore, Okla., to the cause?

The fundraiser was named because it starts in Joplin, Mo., and ends in New Orleans, La. There will be 33 riders who will leave from Joplin on June 20. Each rider has been collecting money toward a $150,000 goal.

The idea is to bring in enough money to build a home in Joplin, in New Orleans and on the East Coast. Each region was affected by its own weather disaster, and the three have formed a bond through Rebuild Joplin, the St. Bernard Project of New Orleans and nonprofit groups in New York and New Jersey.

Now the good folks in Moore need our help. You could help with your donations.

An online donation site has been established at http://www.jomonola.org/donate.html. Or you can mail a check made out to Rebuild Joplin, 705 Illinois Ave. No. 1, Joplin, MO 64801. You can also call 417-623-0065 to charge by phone.

Jim Feeney, of Rhode Island, and Jerrod Hogan, of Joplin, got the ball rolling on the bike ride. Feeney, who volunteered in Joplin after the tornado, told us: “To me, it’s not geographically important where the money goes. I think it’s just great to see the power of people in the rebuild.”

We know there will be bike pedals powered by some caring riders. Let’s support the cause and, while we’re at it, raise enough money to build a house in Moore.
