Your View: Moore deserves more

LAMAR, Mo. — As do many, I have great sympathy for the people of Moore, Okla., and I have accompanied my sympathy with support.

Once again, as in the Newtown, Conn., tragedy, children have been victims of death and injury that could have been prevented or mitigated. For Newtown, it was reducing the availability of guns. In Moore, it was providing storm shelters at schools.

I happened to see an interview on television with Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., in which he was asked if storm shelters should be mandatory in schools.

To no one’s surprise, he took the standard conservative position that the government should not intervene. Then, just coincidentally, I turned the channel and there was Republican Gov. Mary Fallin being asked the same question. Her response was typically political — she said she would support a debate on the issue. The people of Oklahoma, especially those in Moore, deserve better.
