Our View: Friends at the fair

One of the best times to be had by any kid is going on right now in both Jasper and Newton counties.

Next week this summer staple of rural life will be found in McDonald County and Cherokee County in Kansas.

We’re talking about youth fairs, of course.

Even as you read this, hundreds of young exhibitors are already up and off their cots mucking out stalls, washing their heifers and steer calves, and checking on halters and lead ropes. Friday’s always a big day at the county fair.

Those who have never been involved behind the scenes of a county fair may not realize just how many months of planning and labor goes into the successful staging of a fair. Moms and dads hoping to re-create this special event for their own kids turn out in force, along with grandparents, aunts and uncles and a neighbor or two.

All in the name of promoting a way of life generation after generation have held dear.

Erin Bell, of Jasper, told our reporter her two youngsters are showing their chickens at the Jasper County Youth Fair because she was involved in the youth fair when growing up and wanted the same experience for her two children.

“It’s something we do as a family,” she said.

We would encourage you to visit your county fair and support the efforts of generations of farm families.

Yes, it’s hot. It’s always hot at the fair. But the fans blowing through the livestock barns make it comfortable, and there’s always a bale of hay straw nearby for a rest.

Did we say this is one of the best times for kids?

Add adults to the list. There’s no better place to be in July than at a county fair.
