Your View: Nail on the head

CARTHAGE, Mo. — The guest column by Don Ray (Globe, July 7) hit the nail on the head.

Why should we go halfway around the world and try to change people to our way of thinking and our way of living? They have been living their way for thousands of years and don’t care to change.

We do have friends who feel the same as we do. When they need help and ask for it, we should do as much as we can.

Why should we try to clean up what we perceive as their problems, when we can’t clean up our own?

Why should we not help our neighbors with their problems — which affect us — rather than others who don’t want our help?

The people of the world think of us as snobs with deep pockets and take advantage of us whenever possible. I lived in a state that neighbors Mexico and have good friends from that country. They are basically good people, hard-working and want to take care of their own.

I am a conservative and a Republican. Our representative and the others in Washington better stop playing politics and get involved with our neighbors. If they don’t, they will find themselves back home living off their big retirement fund they get for doing nothing. This is a growing feeling.
