Your View: Important reunion

JOPLIN, Mo. — On Saturday, July 20, the 140th edition of the Old Soldiers and Sailors Reunion was held in Erie, Kan.

This reunion was started by Civil War veterans in 1873 and has continued until this day. Joel Winans moved to Erie in 1881 and lived there until his death in 1901. He was a Civil War veteran.

My daughter, Melissa, and I, were honored by our family, by leading the Winans float in uniform.  She is a veteran of the regular Army and also served with the 203rd Engineer Battalion in Joplin. She also served a year in Iraq and was honored by the folks in Erie for her service. I served three years in the Army and 22 years in state national guards in Kansas, Texas and Missouri. I retired from the 203rd in 1997.

This year was the 42nd annual Winans reunion, which started in 1971, and has been held for the past 23 years on the same weekend as the reunion. We had relatives from Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Nebraska and Indiana at this year’s event, and they all are descendants of George and Ida Winans, my grandfather and grandmother. These reunions make me realize how important family are, and I hope they will continue to meet in the future.
