Our view: Unnamed heroes

Thank you in advance, Mr. President, for your planned visit to our city on Sunday.

We appreciate your concern and the already-provided federal response to our devastation from the deadly May 22 tornado, as well as the assistance already provided by the state under Gov. Jay Nixon’s leadership.

We need help now, and the assistance is gladly received.

The real heroes, or at least some of them, will be standing before you when you make your public presentation on Sunday. Those heroes are the unnamed of Joplin, the 70 percent who were not wiped out, helping the 30 percent who lost it all.

If ever there was an example of a remarkable community response to a disaster, this is it, right here in Joplin. And the core of that response was a result of people helping people.

None of us will ever know the lives saved or the full extent of the help provided literally within minutes of the storm. But it was there in full force, and it came by and large from our local folks who will be standing before you on Sunday.

We also note that local leadership is what really matters at the end of the day, and we have seen many of our local leaders rise to this occasion.

Again, thank you for coming to Joplin. All of us accept your visit as a matter of support and respect you for that support.

We hope you in turn take a good look at those who will stand before you on Sunday.

There, Mr. President, are the heroes and leaders in this disaster.
