Your View: Snowden’s disdain for U.S.

JOPLIN, Mo. — It has been reported on CBS News that Edward Snowden has petitioned 20 countries of the world for asylum from American justice. This young man recently betrayed the trust our government put in him to work at the National Security Agency.

He has not merely betrayed a sworn trust, he has jeopardized thousands of other young men fighting our country’s battles.

I had top secret clearance as well as atomic energy clearance while in the U.S. Navy from 1946 to 1956.

During that time I had the occasion to retrieve and lock in a safe a top-secret battle plan left on a commissioned officer’s desk. I took my pledge to my country and fellow servicemen with utmost sincerity.

Snowden’s disdain for America’s military secrets and his attempt to find asylum in another country remind me of the long-ago book “A Man Without A Country.” I am hoping he will have to travel the world until he dies without ever stepping on American soil again.
