Your View: Above and beyond

JOPLIN, Mo. — I want to publicly thank the nonprofits, churches, businesses, hospitals, schools, volunteers, and disaster recovery organizations that are part of the Long Term Recovery Committee. These amazing people have collaboratively served Joplin and Duquesne residents recovering from the tornado above and beyond the call of duty.

They’ve been on the ground alongside Federal Emergency Management Agency and disaster volunteers, providing case management, community outreach services, emotional and spiritual counseling, and assistance with transportation, clothing, home furnishings, bedding, medical care, home repairs and rebuilding.

The LTRC partners have coordinated job placement, housing services and social services at the Human Services Campus at the FEMA units and throughout the community. They provided a safe haven for children who were displaced by the tornado. They assist senior citizens and people with disabilities and special needs.

The LTRC members process, assign and provide food and housing for thousands of volunteers who helped this community with debris removal, door-to-door checkups and emergency housing. Because of their boots on the ground, these unsung LTRC heroes will always have a special place in my heart.

Our local affiliate, Community Foundation of Southwest Missouri, is honored to provide over $3 million in grants to various organizations, including the LTRC, that are helping people recover from the tornado. We are eternally grateful to everyone who donated to make Joplin and Duquesne’s recovery work possible.

Thank you, LTRC! Happy new year.
