Fort Scott, Kan. —
The last time we had a Kansas attorney general from Southeast Kansas, she hired a young attorney from Independence to help her with her work on her behalf. Derek Schmidt, of Independence, was an assistant attorney general for consumer protection in the Carla Stovall administration.
Now, Schmidt is our Republican nominee for Kansas attorney general this year. I support him, and I hope you will too.
After leaving the attorney general’s office, Schmidt went on to serve as special counsel to Gov. Bill Graves. He then returned home to Independence and was elected to the Kansas Senate. He currently serves as our Senate majority leader and works diligently to bring together people of diverse philosophies — Republicans and Democrats alike.
Schmidt understands our needs and priorities in Southeast Kansas. He was the chief Senate sponsor of Jessica’s Law, which puts violent sex offenders who prey on children in prison for life. In response to our meth epidemic, he wrote the Sheriff Matt Samuels Act that reduced the number of meth labs sharply. He led the charge to toughen penalties against property crimes so that law enforcement has useful tools to fight theft and burglary.
Schmidt continues to work as a city prosecutor in Independence, so he sees our region’s law-and-order challenges firsthand.
I believe Schmidt is the right choice to be our attorney general. I’m voting for him, and I hope you will also.
Bob Marshall
Fort Scott, Kan.
State senator, District 13
