Your View: Government help

JOPLIN, Mo. — A recent editorial writer hoped to improve or maybe make his case with the quote that we don’t understand trouble until we ask government to help us with it.

Maybe a better one is that “the government that governs best, governs least.”

Then Will Rogers said: “I don’t belong to an organized political party; I’m a Democrat” and “I don’t concoct humor; I watch politics and report on it.”

The folks we most like to laud historically were reluctant politicians and officials recruited out of necessity and perceived need. Need has been the continuing avowed rationalization for government need and efficiency.

Some of today’s programs may be reminiscent of the old WPA projects, just presented differently. One fellow opined a year ago that the feds should just butt out of Missouri and that we would do just fine. That completely ignores the massive assistance that the immediate Joplin area has received in dollars that were not specifically generated in this area. We’ve had all sorts of grants, and where significant dollars come in, there is a rationalization for at least the accounting and for probably a project manager or site manager. There are some rascals in the there; the problem is in the practitioners, not in the practice.
