Your View: What would you do?

JOPLIN, Mo. — Just suppose that you own a house that admittedly needs repair.

You hire a contractor to address the structural issues and give him $45,000 to work with. Any additional fees more than $5,000 will require pre-approval by you, the owner. When the job is completed, you see that the structural issues have been resolved and the house has been decorated, too. You may love the results, or not.

The main problem is that the submitted bill is for $82,000. What would you do? Pay the requested amount with gratitude? I don’t think so. I believe you would terminate your relationship with the contractor. You certainly would not trust him with oversight of your next project.
