Your View: Ask the questions

JOPLIN, Mo. — Everyone in favor of world peace, please stand!

I thought so.

There are, as they say, however, many a slip between the thought and the deed, or accomplishment.

Our City Council has done a tremendous job for us in recent years.

Yet, there was a dismaying lack of attention in the 15th Street overpass “fiasco.” The group only yielded to the obvious after being called to task by locals.

So, recycling is good. Only we have been sold a black-box concept.

We haven’t seen good estimates on what the effect curbside will have on the big blue dumpsters currently in use.

Will they now be grossly oversized for more than half of the participating households?

What will a resident need to do, optimally, in separation of categories of items to be collected?

Does the city see any prospect or intention of phasing out, or at least modifying, the city recycling center?

Could this center be freed to provide daily auto, tire and electronics acceptance?

Incidentally, one individual mentioned his personal practice to arrive at opening time to avoid having to carry items from the street.

My observation is there appears to be room for expansion of the area with minor rearranging.

Is there a problem with this?

Or has there been a decision not to grow the center?

Truthfully, a few years back, I was of the opinion the council should act unilaterally when one individual was doing his best to lobby against putting fluoride in our water — honestly, I suppose, but badly misguided.

Even now, it seems that there remain a number of demons in our details, and it seems only now that our council members are starting to ask relevant questions, and are only rewarded with generalizations and a warm, fuzzy feeling.

Let’s try to determine to make a responsible choice here, even if it is only a couple of dollars a month.
