JOPLIN, Mo. —
In 1961, my husband and I took our 5-year-old son to Independence to visit the Truman Library.
We were thrilled with the unexpected appearance of President Harry S. Truman and other famous people. I tried to impress on my child that this was a day to remember. He had seen the president of the United States.
After returning to Southwest Missouri, we ran into the editor of the local newspaper. We told him about our visit to the museum. Then I turned to my son and asked him to tell the editor what he had seen at the museum.
His face lit up and he proudly exclaimed, “President Stan Musial!”
