They initially came in droves, pouring into Joplin by the thousands during the months following the May 2011 tornado to clear debris, clean up damaged homes and businesses and distribute donations of food, water, clothing and other necessities.

Your View: More than a ‘gaffe’

JOPLIN, Mo. — I didn’t get much from Kevin Wilson’s hopelessly vague and wishy-washy column in Sunday’s Globe (“One comment shouldn’t indict entire GOP,” Sept. 9).

However, I did manage to pluck out his description of Todd Akin’s rape comments as a mere “gaffe,” ignoring that Akin’s so-called gaffe was based on the grotesque belief that women can magically ward off pregnancy from a “legitimate rape.” That’s like calling Mitt Romney’s frequent exercises in poor judgment as mere “flip-flops.”

This is one time I must agree with David Humphreys, a leading donor to Republican races, who called Akin “a moron.”
