Our View: Problem resolved for now

— Region X of the Area Agency on Aging, which operates senior centers and feeding programs in McDonald, Barton, Newton and Jasper counties, is always in need of a Santa.

The agency operates on budgets determined by the government. Earlier this year, the combination of sequestration, state withholdings and a government shutdown caused the agency to put seniors needing meals delivered to their home on a waiting list.

Fortunately, due to the generosity of those in the community and many of those who are employed by the Area Agency on Aging, those on the waiting list can now be in the program.

Fundraisers were held. Phone calls were made to local companies, and checks were written.

We have noticed that services for the elderly and for children are threatened when politicians practice gamesmanship. Suggest consequences to these two groups, and odds are people are going to pay attention. But it’s a bad policy to use America’s most vulnerable as bargaining chips.

We’re elated that the homebound meal waiting list has been lifted. The meal program helps the elderly stay in their homes. It provides a daily check on those who live alone and provides a daily nutritious meal.

If you would like to be a Santa in your community, we can think of no better donation than a week’s worth of meals to a homebound senior. Or, for those seniors who can still drive to a senior center, a meal card costing $30 will buy 10 days’ worth of lunches.

We appreciate the efforts of local agency personnel to take it upon themselves to raise “lunch money.”

Let’s give them a hand.
