Your View: Listen to the patriots

JOPLIN, Mo. — “No way do I reject attempts to create harmony amongst men and women. But religion itself has been far too destructive, in my view, throughout the course of history to rely on religion to do so.”

— Anson Burlingame, guest columnist (Globe, July 8)

“It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and the Bible.”

— George Washington

“Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. So great is my veneration of the Bible, that the earlier my children begin to read, the more confident will be my hope that they will prove useful citizens in their country and respectful members of society.”

— John Adams

“A nation of well-informed men who have been taught to know the price of the rights which God has given them can not be enslaved.”

— Benjamin Franklin

“That book (the Bible) is the rock on which our Republic rests.”

— Andrew Jackson

I will concede to Mr. Burlingame that these patriots did make these statements before the thermostat and food stamps and that God might not be as important today. But I believe Mr. Burlingame is not merely denying the central ideas of our forefathers but trying to dissolve the disposition to believe in them.
