JOPLIN, Mo. —
I was happy to see Carol J. Griesemer’s letter in Saturday’s Joplin Globe.
The importance of reducing our energy consumption can’t be emphasized enough. I too have been trying to reduce our household energy usage. Over the past several months, I have succeeded in reducing our monthly consumption by about 30 percent over last year.
If you are interested in saving energy and money, just search “energy saver” on Google, Bing, Yahoo, Facebook, etc., and you will come up with numerous websites or pages that are packed with energy-saving tips. Most of them don’t cost you a thing to implement. It’s addicting. I actually look forward to receiving my monthly bill from Empire District Electric Co. just so I can see how much I’ve reduced my usage over last year.
Your usage from the past two years can be found on Empire’s website. I would agree with Griesemer that Empire should be working harder toward increasing its energy efficiency; however, I believe we also need to push our legislators to demand more energy efficiency out of all utilities.
Maybe they should require that utility companies need to prove they are becoming more energy efficient before any new rate hike will be approved. We all know how they love to increase rates.
Energy efficiency starts with you. You can’t control what the other person does, but you can try to enlighten them. Think green.
