Voices: Deficit spending

JOPLIN, Mo. — Deficit and debt are the biggest dangers America faces, but you would not know that by watching any of the news.

Since the BP blowout, our government has increased deficit spending by $319 billion. We must get our fiscal house in order, or everyone will pay a higher price down the road. Just think, our interest payments by 2015 will be higher than our defense outlays, and by 2020 will top $1 trillion a year. Such insanity must be stopped, or our children and grandchildren will see their standard of living reduced to Third World status.

The Globe had an article on July 6 about MGE getting a rate increase because of the increased cost of natural gas. This is mainly due to the building of gas-powered electric plants and the huge amounts of gas it uses to generate electricity. It will be exacerbated by this administration’s attempt to put a moratorium on drilling. Less gas, more cost, and you will pay the bill. Now the administration wants to pass an energy bill that will double your utility bills, and there is no reaction from the mainstream media. This disaster will be more costly than the BP blowout, and nobody seems to care.

Obamacare has passed and no one knows the final cost, but signs are there it will be massive. Guess who will pay for this monster? You’re right, you will. ABC had a feature about the shortage of family doctors and the increase of patients at the ER this morning, so the problems are starting. Doctors will see less Medicaid patients and less Medicare patients, as they are not getting reimbursed enough to cover the cost. Another trend is the flat fee charged with no paperwork needed, and more doctors are going this route.

The final disaster, financial reform, is in doubt at this time, as the Republicans have found their voice and are trying to stop it. It is 2,500 pages long, and no one seems to know the full extent of this disaster in the making. Maybe the grown-ups will prevail this time and save us from this disaster, but I will not hold my breath.

The news media, The Joplin Globe included, should report the amount of deficit spending every day on the front page. This might get the attention of the taxpayers, so that they could add their voices to the debate. We need to react immediately, as time is getting short, in order to save America from bankruptcy.
