Voices: Tragedy

NEOSHO, Mo. — I had a beautiful dog named Butch. This past week I had major back surgery and was in the hospital.

My friend had been taking care of our two dogs in the evening. When she arrived Thursday evening, she found Butch tied to the front gate with his broken chain. Apparently he had gotten loose and was out near the highway and somebody, maybe a neighbor, saw him running loose dragging his chain.

They tied his chain to the locked gate knowing we would find him when we got home. It was in the high 90s in direct sunlight. He tried with all he had to dig under the gate and get back into the yard to his water.

My friend found him dead from the heat and no water. I lost my best friend.

Please don’t let this happen to your dog or anyone else’s.

What was an intended good deed by a good Samaritan turned out to be a heart-breaking tragedy.
