Your View: Is this really a good idea?

JOPLIN, Mo. — Nobody has to buy popcorn at the movies. But can we surmise one reason for the expense for snacks is strongly influenced by attendance “gates”?

For every packed house, there may be several days when one could swing the proverbial cat and hit no one. Is there any assurance for success of a second similar theater in town and in direct competition?

Are we thinking that maybe a new one will be encouraged to specialize more in family fare and that a library/theater combination will work as a semi-secure day care for our young?

What happens in the very likely circumstance of reduced attendance at our existing theater?

Is there any suggestion of subsidizing a family-oriented movie house to encourage its development? And, even with some form of repayment for new ownership and management, will the owners of the current movie theater have a legitimate gripe about the privileged financing arrangement?

There are a few obvious reasons to regroup our library to another location; it is not apparent to me that the current proposal is a good idea.
