Your View: Take primaries seriously

PITTSBURG, Kan. — The Globe’s Aug. 25 guest column about “Congress dragging the country down” highlights a routine failure of too many voters who do not take primary elections seriously.

When a small percentage of voters can dictate which candidates are elevated to the general election, enthusiastic “tea partiers,” “radicals,” “rightwing nuts” (pick your own term) can potentially get elected, via the initial primary election, to eventual congressional seats, in spite of contrasts or deficiencies in qualifications in contrast to primary election opponents.
