Your View: Ban the ‘noisemakers’

JOPLIN, Mo. — At the risk of being labeled a Fourth of July “Grinch,” which I assure you I am not, I’d like to suggest we rethink some aspects of the celebration’s traditions.

Specifically, I’d like to suggest that pure bang-bang, boom-boom “noisemakers” be banned within the city limits.

These things are terrifying to our pets and small animals, annoying to most of the general population and represent a proven potential hazard of personal injury to the participants and any nearby spectators.

By all means let’s continue to celebrate with all sorts of outdoor activities, picnics, parades, etc and top it off with glorious rockets in the night sky, but let’s do it only on the Fourth and in ways that don’t needlessly terrify our pets.
