Our View: Taking the challenge

Take a walk around the large loop at Joplin’s Campbell Parkway. By the time you’ve come full circle, you will have walked a mile.

Pat yourself on the back. Ninety-nine more circles, and you will have completed the Governor’s 100 Missouri Miles Challenge.

Earlier this summer Gov. Jay Nixon and First Lady Georganne Nixon launched the challenge, urging Missourians to complete “100 Missouri Miles” of physical activity by the end of the year while using parks and trails.

Those taking the challenge can register through, and track their progress.

Even if you don’t register, or if you are one of our neighbors in Kansas, Oklahoma or Arkansas, the idea of a 100-mile challenge is a good idea and one that can be met by the entire family.

Consider that Joplin alone has 25 miles of existing trails.

Whether you require an easy level walk — which you can find on Campbell Parkway — or a more rugged hike up the bluffs of Shoal Creek, you can find them. If you are looking to find a place to explore in a state park, visit Prairie State Park or Roaring River State Park. Both have trails of varying lengths and difficulty.

The idea behind the challenge is a sound one. It encourages physical activity, and it prods residents to get to know what exists beyond their couch.

Of course, it’s good for the economy as well. According to figures provided by the state of Missouri, visitors to state parks produced an overall economic impact of $1.02 billion and supported more than 14,000 Missouri jobs.

Start your journey today, then write us a letter and let us know if you completed the challenge. We’re sure you will discover something new about your town and your state.
