Your View: Support farming amendments

MONETT, Mo. — There were a couple of letters recently in the Globe (April 21) regarding the “freedom to farm” amendments that I feel deserve a response from someone.

Not only were the letters somewhat offensive in their references to some local farmers and ranchers, their ways of life and their organized agriculture groups, I feel they also very much distorted the reality behind this whole issue. If Darvin Bentlage truly believes he has never needed or will never need “protection” for his way of life, and that people simply making the “choice” of what products to buy will be all the protection he ever needs, then he is blissfully naive of what is going on in our world today.

There are several groups out there today who are collectively spending hundreds of millions of dollars annually to try to take away people’s rights to make that choice. They make no secret that they want the elimination of all animal agriculture through legislation or any other means and will use emotion, distortion and lies to achieve this.

It is ironic that Mr. Bentlage would cite the European Union, where the leftist extremists have used misinformation and irrational, baseless fear to create illegal trade barriers and control over agriculture, all with zero basis in science or fact. Is that where we should go?

And the other letter in the paper simply showed that we probably do need such an amendment: When people have little or no knowledge in a field, they feel they have the right to tell everyone else how to do things.

I urge people and lawmakers to support these amendments, which probably are not perfect (no law ever is), but seem to have become necessary to protect all of us in agriculture in a society where common sense seems to have vanished. Thank you for listening.
