Federal, state leaders salute Joplin’s recovery

A deadly May twister may have punched a hole in Joplin and Duquesne two years ago, but the resolve to repair it will help other communities stand strong when they face similar disasters. That was the message of state and national diginitaries to a crowd of about 2,500 who observed the second anniversary of Joplin’s devastating May 22, 2011, storm during a ceremony Wednesday in Cunningham Park.

DIAMOND, Mo. — When the national debt was about $1 trillion, Ronald Reagan informed us that $1 trillion would be a stack of one thousand dollar bills over 60 miles high. Those would be one thousand dollar bills lying flat, stacked one upon another.

The national debt is now $16 trillion. That would be a stack of one thousand dollar bills over 960 miles high.

Converted to dollar bills, the stack would be over 960,000 miles high. That would be more than enough to circle the earth 36 times, and more than enough to reach the moon three times.

Research question: How long would it take the fed to print a stack of dollar bills 960,000 miles high?
