Your View: Making facts public

JOPLIN, Mo. — Few people are aware it was Susan Redden, Globe reporter, receiving numerous public complaints about Rita Hunter’s poor treatment of her wards and about the high fees she was billing them for her services that prompted Redden’s investigation.

The benefit of Redden’s award-winning journalistic skills brought attention to the mismanagement of Rita Hunter’s office as Jasper County public administrator.

This was no easy task, as the investigation ranged across a broad range of governmental, legal, medical and business sectors.

Through Redden’s inquiries, facts became public.

That caused a heads up among public agencies and law enforcement who took up the investigation of Rita Hunter, which years later resulted in the  sentencing Thursday by federal Judge Dean Whipple to one year and one day in a federal penitentiary, financial restitution and three years parole upon release from prison.

Susan Redden’s concern and efforts on behalf of the disfranchised wards and protectees of our county who were being maltreated is a service to all citizens.

Thank you, Susan Redden.
