Your View: Fireworks, Constitution

JOPLIN, Mo. — I support what Leland Browne said in his letter (Globe, July 15) regarding the use of fireworks to celebrate the Fourth.

I understand the fun and the desire to make a big noise about living in a free country, and Joplin’s city ordinance generously allows for the use of fireworks for four days — until 11 p.m. July 1 through July 4.

However, almost every night since July 1, someone in my vicinity has continued to launch the big noisy sky rockets, generally between 9:30 and 10:30, sometimes later.

They know it’s illegal, so they only do it for five to 10 minutes so they can’t be caught if someone calls the police — but it’s long enough to wake and frighten babies and small children, terrorize animals and wake up people who work shifts. Freedom requires responsibility, something that those who continue to amuse themselves at the expense of others simply do not have.

It has gone from being a celebration of our freedom to purely selfish entertainment.

I also stand with Charles McGrew (Globe, July 13) regarding the presence of God after the tornado.

And, I would add, while you may not find the specific word “God” anywhere in the Constitution, He was a major influence in the lives of those who founded this country and wrote that document based on their belief in Him.
