Voices: ‘Stockholm Syndrome’

It seems that neither autism nor fibromyalgia really got the attention that it deserved until they were more fully defined and diagnosed. Now some of the experts say we have another problem — the Stockholm Syndrome. It’s sort of like the child in a Grimm tale, who had the cruel stepmother. It’s where we perceive ourselves rather at the mercy of an entity which is abusive.

Maybe we have overestimated the power of major financial players, maybe not. Some say the bailout came only a few days before real disaster struck, as if the magnitude of the loans isn’t real and major. Maybe most of us will only pay “our fair share” of the sums, just as we do for other needs. But a year after the worst of the crisis, we still see the financial groups wallowing in privileged inertia, in actual practice, lack of current legislation and scant prospect of much further restriction. We like to think that “government is best that governs least,” but continue to deal with folks that seem both uncontrollable and unrepentant.

Jot down “Stockholm Syndrome” somewhere handy.
