On Oct. 23, I had shoulder surgery at a local hospital. I am for some sort of health care plan where doctors don’t have to pay tons of money to protect themselves against silly lawsuits.
I am for a system that doesn’t rip off Medicaid and Medicare, I am for a system where the old or unemployed don’t suffer because they can’t afford treatment.
But above all else, I am for a hospital that employs caring people, like the ones who took care of me.
There must have been at least seven people who treated me with concern. I felt like I was at a five-star hotel. Thank you, hospital employees who, in the midst of controversy over health care, come to your job and give patience and tolerance, and comfort and caring to people who are placed into your care. My heart is still full of warmth from the kindness that you showed to me that morning and you are a big part of my quick recovery.

Millions of dollars in donations have poured in from around the world since the May 22, 2011, tornado. Those donations represent money from lemonade stands, charity auctions, corporate gifts and celebrity checks, just to name a few. In fact, one year later donations continue to come to Joplin.
