By now you may have noticed big cardboard boxes located in the entryways of several local businesses and retailers.
Those aren’t for trash, by the way.
A lot of people are counting on you this year to notice them and then take action. The boxes are for donations of food for Souls Harbor in Joplin and Wesley House in Pittsburg, Kan.
This is the third year that The Joplin Globe, KSN TV, KODE-TV, Arrow Box Co. and First State Bank have asked the community to help in feeding those less fortunate. It’s called “Helping Hands, Helping Others.”
We’re not asking for a lot. A bag of diapers, a few cans of soup or a jar of peanut butter are all on the list. Maybe you can spare a few boxes of macaroni and cheese, a pound of sugar, a box of crackers or a can of baby formula.
We don’t want to burden our readers — many of whom we know are having hard times themselves. But we do want to tell you about a way you can do something good for someone else. And, you can choose how much you want to do.
Everyone has experienced bad times in their lives. In our view, being part of the community means we help out when and where we can.
Donation boxes are located at Joplin, Carthage and Webb City Wal-Mart locations, Joplin Food 4 Less, Dillons in Joplin and Pittsburg, Ron’s Supermarket in Pittsburg, First State Bank locations in Joplin, The Joplin Globe, First United Methodist Church in Pittsburg, KODE-TV and KSN TV in Joplin, Wesley House in Pittsburg and Souls Harbor in Joplin.
