Our View: Fill the plate

— Even before the sequester, we were reporting some of the difficulties our area senior centers were having finding enough volunteers and money in the budget to meet the demands of a growing homebound meals program.

Now, federal cuts that went into effect on Friday could result in an 8.5 percent reduction in funding for the Area Agency on Aging. Stan Heater, the executive director for our agency, said that could reduce the annual number of meals served by about 12,000.

Again, the homebound meal program will see the impact of the cuts first. Heater said he did not think those who travel to the center for their meals would be affected.

Local centers are reaching out to the community by holding a “Dinner Plate Fundraiser.”

Each center will have paper dinner plates at its site. Those who wish to make a donation may write their name on the plate, and the center staff places it on their “wall of fame.”

There is no designated amount you have to donate. It’s up to you.

The meal program is for seniors 60 and older, and the suggested donation is $3 a meal.

We urge you to consider a donation, and while you are at it, stop by and have lunch.

You can also send a donation to Area Agency on Aging Region X, P.O. Box 3990 Joplin, MO 64803. The phone number is 781-7562 if you need more details.

Pass the plate, and fill a plate.
