Our View: Hate hurts us all

— Investigators say Sunday’s shooting of three people — two at a Jewish community center and another at a retirement complex in Overland Park, Kan. — were hate crimes.

The man who has been arrested is from Southwest Missouri and is known for the hate he’s been spewing for years. Frazier Glenn Cross, of Aurora, is a former Ku Klux Klan leader and has long been a vocal anti-Semite who called for genocide against Jews.

Almost eight years ago, the man, also known as Frazier Glenn Miller, threw his white-supremacist newspaper into the yards of some Joplin residents, many of whom were so disturbed by what they read that they called the Globe to report the ugly, vile comments he had to make about almost every minority. He called his tabloid the “newspaper for white Americans.” Our newspaper, by the way, refused to print his trash when he looked for a commercial printer.

Frazier Glenn Cross or Frazier Glenn Miller — whoever he is — is now accused of turning his hate speech into murders. His victims were a doctor, his 14-year-old grandson and an occupational therapist.

The suspect was widely known. He wasn’t exactly low-key. He ran for the U.S. House of Representatives in 2006 and the U.S. Senate in 2010. He has always espoused hate, although he has never been known to be violent.

We don’t understand this kind of hate. But we do know that it is toxic and that it is blind to reason and independent thought.

Our deepest sympathies go out to the families who have been cruelly robbed of their loved ones.

But we are all targets of this crime, because hate hurts everybody.
