Our View: Thanks again

An article published in The Washington Post highlights the $6 million in financial assistance provided to Joplin by the United Arab Emirates.

The context of the article was to show how other countries now contribute to the United States, much in the same manner that we have provided massive aid in times of disaster to other countries.

In the big picture of dollars that have been donated to Joplin since the May 2011 tornado, the UAE contribution is just one example of generosity. Joplin students are now using computers to advance their education thanks to the donation has been key in getting Joplin back on its feet. And, just a few weeks before the one-year anniversary of the tornado, it was announced that a grant of $5 million from the UAE would support the construction of a children’s wing at the new Joplin Mercy Hospital.

So thank you again, UAE, for what you have provided Joplin. It also seems you are doing the same for victims of Hurricane Sandy.

We hear much in our news today of turmoil in the Middle East, particularly that caused by radical Islamists. But we don’t hear often how Muslim countries use their oil wealth to provide assistance around the world.

It is a simple but important point, in our view. We live today in a very complex and contentious world.  Yet acts of kindness, generosity and compassion with no strings attached still exist in such a world.  Every little bit counts, and we the people of the United States should applaud such acts when we are on the receiving end.

  • Our View.jpg Our View: Too many questions on No. 5

Even though the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guarantees “the right of the people to keep and bear arms,” Missouri voters on Aug. 5 are being asked to consider an amendment that restates that freedom and then goes even further.

The wolf (the Humane Society of the United States, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals and other radical animal rights organizations) has conned Little Red Riding Hood (the Missouri Rural Crisis Center, The Joplin Globe editorial staff and, as of last week, the local Democratic leadership).

The Globe has been on my reading list for over 35 years, and during that time the Globe has frequently supported tax increases. Same thing again in the Sunday, July 27, editorial, “‘Yes’ on 7.”

The Missouri Department of Transportation is wanting more money through a three-quarter-cent addition to the sales tax. Consider one example of how it spends your money.

I received two fliers through the mail today asking me to vote “yes” on Amendment 7, which would add a three-quarter-cent tax to Missouri’s sales tax to help maintain roads and bridges.

“Shall the Missouri Constitution be amended so that the people shall be secure in their electronic communications and data from unreasonable searches and seizures as they are now likewise secure in their persons, homes, papers and effects?”
