Your View: A warning

JOPLIN, Mo. — I am a veteran of World War II and served in the infantry and in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Just a few days ago I read and heard that a suggestion was made to lower our national defense to a pre-World War II status.

On Dec. 7, 1941, airplanes from Japan dropped bombs on Pearl Harbor, excessively damaging our ships and killing a large number of U.S. military personnel. This country was shocked beyond belief.

According to history, President Franklin D. Roosevelt called two high-level Navy officers to take charge of the bad situation at Pearl Harbor and they told him that the Japanese could have gone to California and continued their devastation because of our low level of military preparedness.

Please tell me who could be so foolish as to suggest we return to pre-World War II levels when so many countries desire to eliminate our democracy and replace it with socialism or some other form of government and take away our freedom for generations to come.

This letter is not meant to be political or religious but to allow you to see what happened on Dec. 7, 1941, and what is happening to our democracy now.

I do not want any group to misunderstand my motive. I ask Democrats, Republicans, independents and anyone else reading this letter to accept it as a warning from someone who lived during and after the Pearl Harbor attack.

If you agree with me, please contact your senator and representative and express your opinion.
