Your View: The larger questions

JOPLIN, Mo. — About 60 years ago, some of us high school seniors who were somewhat good with words got together to compose the school’s first student council constitution and bylaws.

Being basically clueless, we asked a couple of other communities for copies of their school rules. Then we managed to put together something that seemed appropriate for our group at that particular time — then we graduated and left.

It appears to me that some of us are attempting to cobble together a social gospel that is basically a white, middle-class American Bible, and the evolution discussion is symptomatic of that.

The larger questions are: Do we believe that Christ was of virgin birth, miraculously; that he was/is the Son of God; that there is no other name or method or propitiation for our sins; that we need to be diligent in our attempts to follow his example and commandments?

There isn’t time or reason to waste time with the evolution discussion if one adheres to the basic precepts. Do we believe that Adam and Eve were divinely and miraculously put together as adults well into reproductive age? A God capable of human creation might have no trouble putting together a similarly pre-aged Earth, with any sort of geology and fossil deposits of his choosing. He is an awesome God.

The evolution discussion is often a Trojan horse for disbelief in the Bible, allowing all sorts of mischief to follow.

Oh, and after being close to the May 2011 tornado, I think that biblical creation — had there been a witness — certainly might have seemed like an explosion, though not of the sort usually associated with the big-bang theory.
