Your View: Right guy already here

JOPLIN, Mo. — I have had the great honor of twice serving on the Missouri Southern State University Board of Governors. Missouri Southern State University is a great university, and I am proud of our local college.

As everyone is aware, MSSU is now looking to hire a new president. I say the Board of Governors does not have to look too far to find the next president. He’s already here. He is the interim president, Dr. Alan Marble.

I have known Marble his entire life. I worked with his father at Rocketdyne/Teledyne, and I even worked with Marble at Teledyne right after he got out of college. I continued to work with him, and after I retired, I continued to follow his successful career at Crowder College. As most folks know, Marble’s last seven years at Crowder College was as president.

If you ask anyone who has been familiar with Crowder the past 10 years, they will tell you that Marble was a great president. During that period, the enrollment at Crowder shot through the roof. Further, as I’m sure everyone is aware, Marble maintained the great reputation that Crowder College has established in Southwest Missouri.

In addition, as a native of this area and being involved in almost every civic and economic development issue in this area over the past couple of decades, Marble is well-known and respected as an individual and educational leader throughout this area, the state and the nation.

I know that the MSSU Board of Governors and the individuals on the search committee want to do what’s best for the university. I would strongly suggest that MSSU does not need to spend tens of thousands of dollars conducting a nationwide search when the best individual is already sitting in the president’s office.

Talk with anyone who works at MSSU. They will tell you how the morale has gone up tremendously since Marble took over as interim president. I don’t think you will find anyone in the community who doesn’t give him high acclaim for the work he has done as the interim president.

We don’t need to waste the time and money on a search. When you look at the qualities needed to be a great president and look at Marble’s background and experience of already being a great president, I have no doubt the right guy is already here.
