Your View: Why the opposition?

JOPLIN, Mo. — Thanks for presenting the well-written editorial by Kelly Meares (“The impact of ACA isn’t really devastating at all,” Jan. 19).

Hearing about actual experiences with the law is much better than listening to sensational broadcast screaming labeled as journalistic commentary.

My first personal encounter with the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) occurred July 10, 2012, when I received a premium refund of $490 from Golden Rule health insurance for premiums paid in 2011. The explanation was that the company had paid fewer dollars in benefits than required by the ACA. Then one year later, a refund of $189 came for overcharges during 2012.

Just a few months before the marketplace opened, the monthly premium for my high-deductible hospitalization plan dropped over $400 from $714.09 to $280.55.

It was apparent that I had stupidly been buying an overpriced product, which I have now replaced with comprehensive coverage from the marketplace.

If more situations like mine exist and are revealed, it might become more difficult for the opposition to maintain its position against compromise, which could include expanding Medicaid in Missouri. After all, Kit Bond, a former state auditor, governor and U.S. senator, is in favor of doing so.

Why keep it up?
