Your View: Sad

JOPLIN, Mo. — Todd Akin’s apology for a silly statement in no way explains how it escaped his mouth in the first place. Was he like the ninth-grader caught sleeping in history class? Why did he offer (if we understand the accounts) that he had specifically spoken to doctors, or perused medical articles on the subject, or both? Why such absurdity on a topic certain to be on the list of “10 mostly likely”?

Recently, a couple of airline pilots were given medical tests, mental exams, etc., and one was suspended as being unfit. Early on, a physician, in all seriousness, suggested something as simple as a glucose difficulty could have provoked the anomaly.

Are we apologizing, rather late, to Sen. Tom Eagleton? Eagleton was embarrassed out of politics, having served entirely responsibly, as far as I know. Now, some faithful are trying to rally Akin’s candidacy in the face of an incident not just irrational and irresponsible, but possibly symptomatic.

This is sad, is what it is.
